5.1 National interest

5.1.1 Economic development

As a country with the second largest population in the world, India faces numerous domestic challenges, including reduction in poverty, inequality and unemployment; better provision of education, health, housing and food to its citizens; broadening of economic and social opportunities; internal security; and the forging of a cohesive nation state. Currently, the most vital national interest for India is continued economic progress and well-being of the country to meet the demands of development. A number of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s speeches reveal the priority in India’s policy making:

Our government believes that processes of wealth creation are essential for us to meet our commitment to eradicating poverty, and to realise the latter, we are dedicated to supporting the former.1

We need faster growth because, at our level of incomes, there can be no doubt that we must expand the production base of the economy if we want to provide broad-based improvement in the material conditions of living of our population, and if we are to meet effectively the rising aspirations of our youth.2
